'most'는 50%, 'almost'는 90%
<대부분의 사람들이 지난 선거 때 투표했다.>를 영작 해보자.
'Almost people voted in the last election'는 틀린 문장이다.
'most' 또는 'almost all' 대신에 'almost' 가 쓰였기 때문이다.
* Most people: the majority of people (over 50%)
Ex1) Most Americans approve of the way Mr. President is handling the economy.
50% 가 넘는 미국인들이 동의하고 있다는 의미.
Ex2) Most students come to class on time.
대다수의 학생들이 수업시간을 엄수한다.
* Almost all people: nearly all (90% 이상)
Ex) Almost all people dislike paying taxes.
거의 대부분의 사람들이 세금납부를 싫어한다.
* Almost: '거의 다' (just about, nearly) 란 의미이지 '대부분'이란 의미와는 거리가 있다
Ex1) Her plane is almost here (nearly here). Let's wait near the gate.
그녀의 비행기가 거의 다 왔다. (즉 곧 도착한다는 의미.)
Ex2) I am almost ready. We can leave in a few minutes.
나는 준비가 거의 다 되었다. (몇 분 안에 출발 할 수 있다.)
